UEFA have confirmed that they will take no action against Sir Alex Ferguson following his verbal outburst after Manchester United were knocked out of the Champions League by Bayern Munich.

Ferguson was angry at what he perceived to be pressure from Bayern players on referee Nicola Rizzoli to send off home defender Rafael, with the red card marking a complete turnaround in the quarter-final second leg clash at Old Trafford.

Following the Brazilian’s dismissal, Bayern scored twice to seal a semi-final place on away goals, having looked dead and buried when they were 3-0 behind just before half-time.

Ferguson said after his side’s exit: “There was no threat and the referee wasn’t going to do anything about it until they surrounded him. It is typical of Germans, they are like that.

“It is hard to digest something like that, it was a top performance.

“In one way you could say we have thrown it away, in another you could argue we were very unlucky.”

Bayern head coach Louis van Gaal was less than impressed by Ferguson’s tirade, adding: “I thought England was noted for fairness. I have been confronted with three comments.

“It is not what I call fair play, I do not share Sir Alex’s opinion.”

Ferguson also described Bayern as lucky and insisted that United would have won through with eleven men.
